The Aquarium of Crete is the largest aquarium in Greece, occupying a very good position in the ranking of the large aquariums in Europe. It is part of the Hellenic Center for Marine Research, the largest marine science research institution in Greece and one of the largest in Europe.More than 1800 individuals of fish and invertebrates corresponding to more than 130 species of the Mediterranean, are housed in 62 large and smaller tanks that represent their natural habitats. From the large predators, like sharks ,to the tiny seahorses and the phantasmagoria of jellyfish, the variety of marine species of the Mediterranean emerges against the backdrop of underwater landscapes of the Cretan sea, such as the rocks of Matala and the seabottom of Vai. Discover the connection of the Mediterranean with the Red Sea and its tropical species. Learn about our marine organisms through the touch screens located in the area and discover their common and scientific names.
To make the visit to the aquarium even more interesting, the visitor can try the virtual reality experience. A unique experience through which you live like a diver, the wonder and magic of the seabed, in a specially designed room at the Aquarium. Wearing the special VR mask and with the guidance of the staff, the visitor makes a virtual descent, facing some of the largest and most fascinating marine organisms of the oceans. For visitors who wish to take a guided tour of the aquarium, there is the possibility of renting an audio tour device, an invention that enriches their tour with a wealth of information about marine life.
At the exit of the aquarium there is a shop from which visitors can purchase a wide range of souvenirs. There is also a snack bar/restaurant in the area where you can enjoy a snack or your drink with a seaview .
